Municipal Inspection Interviews

Location:  Athabasca Regional Multiplex, upper level meeting rooms, #2 University Drive, Athabasca, Alberta.


Interested persons can meet briefly with an inspector to provide information that they feel may be relevant to the current municipal inspection of the management, administration and operations of the Town of Athabasca.

Town of Athabasca residents and rate payers are invited to complete the survey. Please complete the survey prior to February 28, 2017!

Re: Town of Athabasca – 49th Street Infrastructure Replacements

Please be advised that construction will be commencing on the 49th Street Infrastructure Replacements project beginning August 30, 2016 (dependent on weather) and will last until the end of October 2016. Construction will be on 49th Street between 48th Avenue and 47th Avenue and 48th Avenue between 49th Street and 48th Street.

Work includes removal of the asphalt surface, replacement of the water main, sanitary main and services to property line.

Community Adult Learning Program Call for Applications

The Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education is inviting eligible organizations to apply for ongoing Community Adult Learning Program grant funding. Eligible organizations located in the Athabasca County and interested in serving the Town of Athabasca may apply.


The Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) provides funding and other supports to 130 community-based organizations to facilitate part-time, primarily non-formal, adult learning opportunities in more than 500 communities across Alberta.


Organizations funded through the CALP work towards the following vision:


Adults acquire and build on foundational learning skills through vibrant learning communities.

Please be advised that the Athabasca Landing Pool is closed for repairs effective immediately.  Multiplex staff are working diligently to solve the issue with the main pump and to re-open the facility as soon as possible.  Please check back tomorrow morning for further information as it becomes available.

Water test affirms safety of treated water

January 13, 2014 – lab tests ordered by Aspen Regional Water Services Commission (ARWSC) confirm drinking water in the regional water system is safe.

In December the Commission conducted water tests following a sediment plume introduced into the Athabasca River on October 31, 2013 from a holding pond breach at the Obed Mountain Coal Mine located near Hinton, Alberta.

The Aspen Regional Water Services Commission (ARWSC) in conjunction with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, and Alberta Health, continue to monitor the sediment release into the Athabasca River from the Obed Mountain Mine Site.

Sediment Release from Obed Mountain Mine Site

Late on October 31, 2013, a breach of an onsite containment pond occurred at the Obed Mountain mine near Hinton, Alberta. 

As a result, a significant quantity of mine water was released from the containment pond.  The water from the pond was directed to the main containment pond. Amounts in excess of what the main pond could contain, left the site through a designed spillway. The discharge was estimated at 1,000,000 cubic metres of surface water.
