Riverfront Activity

The J.A. Evans Skateboard Park is one of many attractions that helps make the Athabasca Reiverfront a popular place.  Leading the ribbon cutting ceremony on May 24 are (l-r) Mary Manca, Tim Evans, Lee Evans, Jamieson and Jakub Johnson, Karen Wintonyk and Grahame Johnston.

The riverfront in downtown Athabasca continues to be a popular location for activities and events. Riverfront attractions include the Town Common, Riverfront Stage, Rotary Way walking trails, Rotary Spray Park, J.A. Evans Skateboard Park and the Riverside Campground.

Scheduled and unscheduled events run the gamut from sporting, to social to entertainment for all ages. Families and friends picnic on the riverfront and employees of downtown businesses and agencies lunch there. Visitors in town enjoy the “Little Orange Caboose” Tourist Information Booth, open during the summer months.

Ty Hart and Friends Afternoon in the Park

Carrying on an annual riverfront tradition, the Ty Hart and Friends Afternoon in the Park event takes place on August 23 this year. Celebrating its sixth year, the family-oriented event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The line-up of entertainers confirmed to perform include Ty Hart, Dale Mellot, Andy DeLorme and Chard Morrison.

The popular event is free to the public. Athabasca Town Councillor John Traynor will provide lively commentary as the emcee.

Members of the Athabasca Native Friendship Centre Society will be on hand with teepees and will again offer bannock for sale.

More than simply an afternoon of wholesome entertainment, Ty Hart and Friends Afternoon in the Park also raises money for local causes. Proceeds from a concession stand, raffles and 50/50 draws go to a different cause each year. Last year, Athabasca Home Care received $1,000.

This year, funds raised are earmarked to go towards a heritage project that will tie in with the Town’s anticipated 2011 centennial celebrations.
