Pool Joint Committee

Did You Know . . . A joint Town and County committee has been formed to research swimming facility options in Athabasca.

Joint Committee to research swimming pool options

The Town of Athabasca and Athabasca County have agreed to form a joint committee for the purpose of researching the options for new swimming facilities in Athabasca.

This will come as good news to those in the community who believe that since the existing Athabasca Landing Pool is past its anticipated lifespan, options other than continuing to patch up the old pool facility should be looked into.

The committee will gather information and compare the costs and practicalities of reconditioning the old pool to the costs and benefits of building a new facility. Benefits of location will also be considered, comparing the existing site downtown to a possible location at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex, located on University Drive, adjacent to the Athabasca University Academic Research Centre.

The joint committee will include two councillors each from Town Council and County Council, as well as the two respective chief administrative officers.

Information gathered by the committee will be taken back to the councils for discussion and decision. No dates or timelines for doing this have been set as the joint committee is new and guidelines for the process have not yet been established.

When the process does reach the point where it is time to move the project forward, the joint committee will expand into a building committee and will invite and involve the participation and input of various groups and stakeholders in the community.
