Obed Mine Update

NOTICE – (Update)

Sediment release into Athabasca River Sediment anticipated to arrive in Athabasca later this week The Aspen Regional Water Services Commission (ARWSC) in conjunction with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development and Alberta Health continue to monitor the sediment release into the Athabasca River from a decommissioned mine near Hinton.

The sediment, which is visible in the river, is not expected to arrive in the Athabasca region until later this week. ARWSC will open a raw water intake valve to bring more water into a reservoir which when full contains enough water to serve the region for about 30 days. Prior to the sediment arrival, the water intake valve will be closed to allow the sediment to pass.

Once the sediment has proceeded past the water intake, normal operations will resume. It is important to note that municipal water systems are designed to filter suspended solids out of drinking water.

The ARWSC, Town of Athabasca and Athabasca County are working together and will continue to monitor the situation and will provide further updates should there be any change in status, or as new information becomes available.
