Mayor’s Message

Welcome to Athabasca, Gateway to the Great New North.  Located one hour and thirty minutes north of Edmonton, the Town of Athabasca is truly the gateway to the North with roads leading to Slave Lake, Calling Lake, Wabasca and Fort McMurray.

A community full of optimism and forward thinking and citizens embracing change and development, Athabasca is home to many oil and gas businesses, world renowned Athabasca University which is the Town’s largest employer, a service centre for the agricultural community and Athabasca Regional Multiplex.  A diverse cultural community, Athabasca plays host to many tourists and travelers alike throughout the year and every year sees the welcome addition of many new residents in addition to new business and industry.

Athabasca is one of the oldest communities in Alberta, getting its start during the era of the fur trade due to its natural location on the Athabasca River.  It was a common site to see steam-powered paddle-wheeled boats on the river that were constructed in the area that is now known as the “town common” or riverfront.

Athabasca is a proud community and has taken positive steps in beautification, developing the riverfront park and telling Athabasca’s story through the many interpretive signs throughout the downtown and the riverfront park.

If you are planning to visit Athabasca, move here or do business here our website is informative and will introduce you to our community.  We are proud of our Town, its residents and our position in the greater community as a whole.
