Education Property Tax Assistance for Seniors

Did You Know ...The Government of Alberta has an Education Property Tax Assistance for Seniors program. Information and application forms are available at the Town Office.

Education Property Tax Assistance for Seniors

Qualifying seniors in Alberta can apply to receive an education property tax rebate from the Government of Alberta. Information and application forms are available at the Town Office and on the provincial government website at www.seniors.alberta.ca.

If you have already applied for Seniors Financial Assistance, you are already enrolled for the Education Property Tax program and do not need to apply. If you have not applied for Seniors Financial Assistance you will need to apply so your eligibility for the program can be confirmed.

The Education Property Tax Assistance for Seniors program can help to cover the increase in the education portion of a senior’s property taxes.

The program provides a rebate per senior household to cover increases in the education portion of property tax over the senior’s base year amount.

The base year is the latter of either 2004, or the year prior to the senior turning 65, if the senior turned 65 after 2004.

If the senior moves, the base year will be set using the senior’s first full calendar year’s property tax notice after the move or the completion of a new home.

To qualify, you must be 65 years of age or older, be an Alberta resident, own a residential property in Alberta and have had an increase in the education portion of your property taxes.

Pick up a brochure and application forms at the Town Office, visit the government website at www.seniors.alberta.ca or call the Alberta Supports Contact Centre at 1-877-644-9992 (toll-free).
