Alberta Healthy Living Program - Athabasca

Alberta Health Services offers free group programs in Athabasca to help people and their loved ones living with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, weight concerns and other health conditions.

“The goal of these programs is to assist with making healthy lifestyle changes,” notes Trisha McGregor, a Registered Nurse with Athabasca Community Health Services. “We offer the three pillars here in Athabasca: education classes, an exercise program, and the Better Choices, Better Health self-management program.”

The programs are available to adults 18 years and older who are living with a chronic condition, caring for someone with a chronic condition or wanting to prevent the occurrence of a chronic condition. More information can be found on the Athabasca page of the Alberta Health Services website or by calling the toll-free number, 1-877-349-5711.

Exercise classes are held at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex. An assessment is done before the individual starts the program and throughout. “When you are finished the program, they give you exercises you can do to continue on your own,” says Trisha.

The education classes and the Better Choices, Better Health program run out of the Athabasca Community Health Services building, located on Highway 55 at the top of the east hill in Athabasca.

“The days for the education classes change throughout the year, as we try to stagger them to make them available to people on different schedules,” Trisha explains. “The classes are made up of different topics and are delivered either by myself, a Registered Dietician, or an Exercise Therapist. The Exercise Therapist is the same individual who delivers the exercise programs.”

Better Choices, Better Health is a six-week program. “Whatever condition the person has, ‘Better Choices, Better Health’ will help them with it,” Trisha notes. “They set goals and work with that as their guide.”

There is no cost for any of the programs and no need for a doctor’s referral.

“The programs are open to family members as well,” says Trisha. “If you have a family member who is assisting you with your condition, they are welcome to attend the sessions.”
